Checks having regular health checkups is not typically high on a man’s agenda. Fatty deposits develops in arteries slowly over time, and un-recognized can lead to stroke and heart attack.

Regular health checkups will focus on weight, blood pressure, smoking history, and blood checks for diabetes and cholesterol. With medicines started early enough life expectancy can be significantly increased.

We want to start assessing all Maori men from age 30, and all other men from aged 45, or earlier if there are long term health conditions.

Sexual Health Checks

Our focus here is on healthy safe satisfying sexual health, and appropriate checks and treatment will be offered. This is made more important as conditions like Chlamydia, while frequent in the community, are often asymptomatic in men for a long period. Erectile dysfunction can have a significant impact on self-esteem and relationships and discussion about this is a usual part of such a checkup .

Men have a gradually enlarging prostate gland, and it is routine from aged 50 to enquire about this as part of a routine men’s health screening. Early detection of prostate cancer offers best outcomes.

Mental Health

Men often find it difficult to talk about feeling depressed , anxious, over-whelmed , or desperate .In New Zealand, men , especially rural men , are overrepresented in suicide statistics . The GP is the right person to talk first with and can arrange for whatever further assistance is appropriate.
